I tried to convince my professor that I didn't need to buy an atlas because I already knew geography, which worked. BUT when I tried the same with "The Elements of Style", he told me that everyone needs that, even professional writers.

Our professor put Elements of Style on our booklist, so I own it:)

I too am grateful that one of my teachers made us do a shitton of grammar exercises. I'm all the better for it, although not always causally on the webz.

It's a book review! Of a scholarly book! And people are making value judgments on the topic of the book (which is Nazis by the way).

"The Nazi's were really barbaric." This is an ACTUAL line. "Nazi's" is a term used to show possession.
And NO SHIT they were barbaric! The job of the book review is to read the book, examine the sources and evaluate the author's argument...not make value judgments.

I'm going to become an educator if for no other reason than to make students write essays.

I don't even think I'm that great of a writer....I just think somewhere along the line, some stupid ass educators decided it was no longer necessary to teach kids how to convey thoughts in an educated manner....

What amazes me is that the average student doesn't know anything outside their chosen major. I'm taking a History of Psych class right now and we started with Greek philosophy and are working our way forward. It amazes me how all of this is going over everyone's heads when all I can think is "Oh God, I don't want to hear another lecture on Descartes." Somebody actually asked the question, "What was going on when Jesus was around?"

Well sometimes I don't blame them. I really don't have any desire to learn the stuff Thomas knows like the back of his hand. I do agree though - at least history, literature, basic maths/science, grammar, and so on - the "basic" classes - should be much more important than they currently are.

How can people be in college and not be able to write well? Even in Grade 10, if people can't tell the difference between to, too and two, there is a serious problem.

Around the age of 18/19, spelling and grammar skills begins to steadily decline. By age 6 I could spell "alcoholic" but now, the amount of times I habitually mis-spell "Calander" and "Firey."

My grammar really started to decline when I was 16/17 and started to use computers for all of my assignments. Spell check made my grammar skills atrophy.
