I get that occasionally. Just keep trying, eventually one will start.

UPDATE: Added a video player to the movie blog. My original thought would be to have an embeddable player that would allow direct streaming of full films, but I forgot about the bandwidth costs. Through the freakin' roof. Instead it'll stream trailers for some of the better films reviewed directly from youtube. I'll set up the playlist soon, modifying the CSS code gave me a headache Sad

EDIT: You're thinking of the music blog. That player was always there, I just changed the skin on it because youtube pulled audio capability without video, meaning the playlist would refuse to play. Hence the update. Im on about the movie blog, which now has a player.

Following another DMCA complaint, it got me thinking about the review blog. Eventually in its current state its gonna be closed down as soon as enough complaints against it rack up. As such, I thought I'd try a little experiment, assuming people dont spot some gaping flaw I missed. I have set up a link to amazon's item page for the product (example) which earns me a little commission if bought from clicking that link, the intention being that it'd be enough to cover the cost of external hosting (I think blogger would still be able to take down posts upon complaint, but it would be the host that'd need to be contacted and people wont have a clue who that is). Thoughts?

OK, I think I follow, but clarify a bit for me would you? And let me get this straight. You are going to make money from it? Shocked

DMCA
Ok, you know yours was shut down due to DMCA infringement right? Someone complained about the sharing of copyright materials according to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act and blogger acted. If its a single post then they usually just remove it pending your edit and re-submission. If there are multiple posts then they can go through a slightly longer ordeal and try to get the blog itself removed. If I don't use a blogspot host then they can't do that. Instead i'll be trying to get the funds to cover the costs of a private host (read: www.liferthereviewroom.com or something. I can set up a redirect from the old blogspot address to the new one).

Covering the costs
There are a load of advertising schemes, google probably being the big one. If you see a load of google ads on a page, every time you click one you are generating a bit of revenue for someone being paid for by google. If you see the ads on these externals (non-registered users only), this money is being paid directly to the company hosting these forums and I dont need to worry about costs. That's how they can afford to give out free forums.

Essentially I want to try the same thing, except i'll be using 'Amazon affiliates.' What this means is I place links to the product im reviewing as shown in that post, and if you click to add it to your basket and then purchase it, part of what profits amazon would make goes to me. Its a marketing scheme essentially, if im attracting them new business then they'll give me commission (somewhere between 5% and 10% I think). You buy a cd worth 10 and you're donating 1 to the cause at no extra cost to you. I wont really be making money as anything made will be plugged back in to running server costs.

Does that help?

You are a genius Bawden, due 1. to the fact that I have been meaning for a long ass time to review a bunch of stuff and 2. to the fact that I could actually help cover the costs of the blog that has made my life infinitely better over the last year or so, I am going to actually get a (probably small) special done, goals going to be by March but hopefully sooner

I honestly dont expect to see a return in investment for at least 6 months, but the amazon links I don't think are particularly ugly or obtrusive so regardless of whether it works or not isn't a bad feature.

Sounds like a good idea, but could you not just find the albums on a random blog and post the blog URL not the download link?

It would still be linking to the material so it wouldn't make a difference, Id still get a DMCA complaint for it.

Possibly, but if I get a complaint I cant re-post it until the link has been removed. I had an issue where even though the link was removed, the old google cached version still showed it and I received another DMCA warning because of that. If the blog in question re-posted theirs and still have the cached version linking to the material, i'd still be in the shit. Better to have the file at hand so I can remove it myself. The only thing I had considered tying into this is to set up a password on all files, "Lifer" or something easy to help prevent other people stealing my links and drawing attention to their own blog with my upload, but its not really become too much of an issue yet.

That's probably because they know that they could never compete with our great, in detail reviews and extensive Japanese music archives Hail and lets be honest, that's really the make or break for blogs

Lol, a lot of people just go for quantity as it has better odds of having the album they're after. It is funny you mentioned Japanese though, someone tried to advertise this site in the comments recently.

(-_-) I guess they expect most of your readers to be japanese men (or just regular men for that matter). Not a bad advertising strategy at all haha lol!

But the blogs in english, so surely they must have twigged. Even if it was for Japanophiles, its not like that site has an english option.
