Between the Buried and Me- Progressive Metalcore-The Great Misdirect- 2009- 4.5/5

I came in to listening as a HUGE fan of the band, this band has traveled in many different directions on their albums, including this one. Although it still fits the description of Progressive Metalcore it has taken a definite heavier style than that of “Colors”, but more in the direction of “Alaska”.

The band not only displays this heaviness in the guitar riffs and overall atmosphere, but the bass and drums add to the heaviness at many times as well. The drummer Blake Richardson displays his extreme talent multiple times with fast paced solos and fills. Blake Richardson also uses excellent choices on the selection of notes making the atmosphere seem darker and switch to brighter in just one second. Now, the bassist of this band Dan Briggs who has extreme talent, although the bass usually plucks along in the background for most bands, Briggs not only adds background but displays some of his own riffs, almost as stand out as the guitar at some points.

The vocals for the band done by Tommy Rogers (who also plays the keyboards for the band) are 90% of the album heavy vocals, although they are very irritating to some, I find them excellent and a perfect fit to the band’s sound for he uses VERY agressive type vocals most of the time which. The few times he displays clean vocals, I realize he has quite a mellow voice and he could definitely do well with a progressive rock band. The times he also displays clean vocals are also usually during the choruses of the song, and he comes up with quite beautiful choruses often followed with a backup voice to add more of a “spacey” effect. The keyboards for the band are barely ever displayed although there is a quite lengthy keyboard solo in “Swim to the Moon”.

And lastly I step into the subject of the guitarist Paul Waggoner, although many may not prefer his style of playing a fast mixture of notes and amazing technicality during some parts of the song, none can deny that he is a very skilled guitarist. And for those times when he switches time signatures throughout the song, he always finds the most suitable riff to go along with it.

Highlights: Obfuscation and Swim to The Moon

I've put it up, re-worded a couple of passages which sounded a little off; you seem to have a tendency to start talking about one thing, go into something else then return to your original point meaning you need to repeat yourself. (e.g. "Now, the bassist of this band Dan Briggs who has extreme talent, although the bass usually plucks along in the background for background for most bands, Briggs not only adds background but displays some of his own riffs." <---this just sounds awkward. Not illegible, just odd.)

Constructively, watch out for repeating the same description. You mention "heaviness" three times in very quick succession, and "extreme talent" twice for two different members without elaborating any further. Don't say they're talented, say why they're talented. What makes it heavy? Thick bottom end, bombastic atmosphere, slow crunching and grinding guitars? Its the old issue of describing it aptly, you wont need to use words like "awesome" "excellent" or "talented" because it'll come through in that description. All these words convey is an opinion.

Iagree with some of what he's saying but he said "You'd be surpeised about how little balls out metal there is" which I disagree with, it seems to me that its heavier than colors, but has the same progressiveness as Colors. I also neglected to say what he said being that it is a not an automatic click into liking the album, it took me around 4 listens before I started to reviewe it, but I don't think it would take you 14 listens to get into it like he did.

Those type of album that take a few listens usually turn out to be my favorites. It is nice to hear an album for the 6th or 7th time and hear something new.

I'd say Colors is a better written album and definitely flows better than this one, that being said "Swim to the Moon" is the best song they have ever done and one of my personal favorites to come out this year
