PostSubject: Software Debate Thread   Tue Dec 15, 2009 5:26 pm

Why is it here and not in the Debaters Den? Simple, I expect this to not be serious at all. Filled with sarcasm, cynicism and name calling. And then at the end of it all we all point and laugh at the mac user.

I'll begin with the age-old argument of browser wars, seeing as i've used most of them at some point. First came IE, and then when I no longer had a 56K connection came Opera. I still to this day prefer it over Firefox because its so much more customisable (and by that, I don't mean "I can add extensions and bloat it out") but then they kept bastardising their own program so I inevitably switched to Firefox, which remains my backup.

That's right, im google's bitch and I wouldn't turn back. I never thought Id say it but, this shit actually works. The browser loads in half the time as Firefox, the pages themselves are quicker to load, I can leave it on all night and the whole thing wont use up all my fucking RAM, and - get this - most of the page is actually the website and not all these toolbars and crap. Firefox gets two boxes, one for google and one to look for websites. Chrome has one to search any site you want. I want to search wikipedia? I type wiki before I search. Want to do a blogsearch? I type bs first. Imdb? Take a guess fuckwit.

And before you start crying "I LIEK EXTENSHUNS," Chrome has them now too. I get notifications from google wave, ebay and facebook on my taskbar (and also a de-fuglified facebook with a taskbar that doesn't permanently sit at the top).

When it comes to browsers, I like the anorexic bitch that actually works.

How the hell did you get your facebook to look like that, 3D boxes? Kinda jealous.

Anyways, I use Chrome too, I downloaded it the first day it came out and never even thought about switching back to firefox, mostly because of everything you said about the search bar, its the greatest thing ever.

You need to get the new beta, then you can add extensions. Just search for "Facebook" and its called "beautify facebook" or something.

And they released a "Cooliris" extension now too, which turns youtube/google images into a scrolling wall (no pesky "next" buttons").

If I download and install the new beta version, does it just upgrade the old Chrome I have?

Pretty much. You gotta restart the browser a couple of times for it to kick in, but it makes things a bit snazzier looking and adds the extension option. It automatically imports all the bookmarks and settings too.

I downloaded Chrome the day it came out also. I loved it, but after a while it got really shitty for me. I don't know why either, but I've been better off with Firefox since then and that is what I use nowadays.

You need to clean out your cookies and such every once and a while with Chrome. I just like it's minimalistic approach. I hate tons of bells and whistles.

I'll probably upgrade soon, then.

Since nobody is bringing anything new to the table, I'll continue. Since I've done the big one, i'll move my bitching to microsoft. There's an old joke that says the day microsoft make something that doesn't suck will be the day they launch their new line of vacuum cleaners. Their stock disk defrag software is a perfect example of this. Its slow, old, clunky, liable to crash, strains the hard disk unnecessarily, inefficient, and at the end of the day, doesn't actually do a lot. Enter UltimateDefrag.

Alright, so the company is called "Disktrix," which is hardly original, but not only does it work better, but it gives you more options. It actually maps your hard disk so you can see precisely what is where. It gives you the option to not only defragment files, but consolidate them onto the outside track in order of how often their accessed (the outer track spinning faster, hence being accessed quicker). How well does it work? One of my drives was 80% fragmented. Yeah, I know, shouldn't have let it get that bad. Gave it 40gig to strut its stuff and two hours later its down to under 0.5%. How's that for an endorsement?

I intended to do a few but kinda forgot. Anyway, today my computer broke. Not just a 'whoops this isn't working quite right' kinda broke but a 'every time I turn on the PC it blue screens before I can get to the very first windows loading screen' kinda broke. After running a few hardware scans I slept on it to try to figure out the problem.

Then it hit me. Spyware Doctor. I had used to it to remove some spyware, and I had a hunch it had made a mistake, so heres a list of everything I tried:

1) Repair XP (fucking Dell wouldn't let me)
2) Re-install XP onto another hard drive.
3) Crack Second copy of XP.
4) Replace the entirety of the System32 folder with the newly installed XP's version.
5) Curse when you realise that there are some incompatibility issues between the system32 folder of Pro and Home editions.
6) Strategically slowly replace original files to try to figure out the source of the problem, restarting after each little modification.
7) Narrow it down to an error with the drivers.
8.) Delete the System32 folder and replace it with a handy backup, then rewrite the drivers with that from the second installed copy.
9) Discover that I also deleted the authentication registry, meaning whilst it wont blue screen it wont let me login either.
10) Download a bi-pass for the auth procedure.
11) Curse when I realised in the instructions for the bi-pass it told me to delete essential Windows drivers and not replace them. Fuck off.
12) Find a keygen that works
13) Cheer.

Lesson? Don't fucking use Spyware Doctor. Mistaking essential windows drivers for spyware is a pretty big fucking program flaw Mad

Thanks for the warning. Have you found any good spyware software? I used to use Adaware and Spybot, but updates messed them up and I couldn't get the old versions back Sad Adaware kept crashing before it ever finished a scan and Spybot had to run in the background all the time, slowing my computer massively.

Downloading UltimateDefrag, thanks for that Very Happy

I use IE, Google Chrome and Firefox hehe!

I have always found Firefox to be slower, despite everyone else experiencing the opposite, and web pages look worse on it (at least on older versions), so I've stuck with IE. After having problems with this forum on IE, I tried out Google Chrome. It's quick and glitch free. I also like how download windows remain within the browser window, instead of overflowing on my taskbar. I like all my old add-ons for IE so that's my main browser for now, but the new version of Google will soon take it's place. I use Google for this forum, and have Firefox cached to my university proxy server so I can access everything off-campus.

I've reverted to using Comodo's Firewall again. It's ability to stop trojans is fucking awful but I can't say a lot of spyware gets through. Couple it with regular scans with AVG9 and I should be set.

So, my next software gem (seeing as this is turning into "The ferret's software tricks") is a program I've been using for years called "DVDShrink." This shit is completely open source (read: entirely legally free) and idiot proof. I really do mean, idiot proof. No 'hidden settings' and no problems. Its billed as a 'backup solution for your DVDs,' but im betting everyone uses it to copy films borrowed from friends, relatives, libraries, house parties, etc, etc. If you happen to have two DVD capable drives (one needs to be a DVD-Recorder, and it requires Nero for this particular function) then you can put the DVD into one, a blank DVD-R into the other, and it'll automatically bi-pass the security encryption and re-encode it to fit directly onto the blank disc, complete with menu's, subtitles, audio options and all the other bells and whistles, and unless you have a big TV, the change in picture quality is unnoticeable (if you only have one DVD drive, then it'll record it to a temporary space in the HDD, ask you to replace the disc with a blank and then record it across).

I use AVG and Comodo already, but I suspect some spyware still slips through.

Can DVDShrink be used to reduce the size of a downloaded video when putting it onto disc?
I downloaded and burned all six Star Wars films for my house mate a few months ago. The files were about 1GB each, but only one would fit per 4.7GB DVD, and it took at least 2 hours per film!

A downloaded video (as in a .avi?) no, though if they're 1gig each, you should be able to burn three onto a disc quite happily if you burn it as a data disc. It'll still play on computers and DivX compatible DVD players, but not others. I have some 500 films or so burnt onto disc this way. DVDShrink is a program to work especially for DVDs.

Same. Although for the actual burning I use its sister program DVD Decrypter, which I believe is illegal now.

I just use a cracked copy of Nero, which DVDShrink supports.
