Not sure if this has been asked since im new to the forums, but when it comes to making new music with your band, who should come up with what first?

Lead Guitar
Rhythm Guitar
Bass
Drums
Vocalist

Who should be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th? Put them in the best order for me. Im a guitarist, normally lead. Although i still attempt come up with songs myself on guitar, i find it easiest to start with drums, then rhythm guitar, but maybe some guys who've been in bands for a while would know best

Welcome bounce please post in the intro thread!

Well you want to start with some kind of melody, or a beat on the drums. Usually, in my band, we'll come up with a riff on guitar, the bass will mirror it (and at some point maybe give it a few jazzy tweaks)) and we'll come up with a drum beat for it. From there on you just jam/add more riffs to the rest of the song, then fine-tune.

So the short answer would be to start out with rhythm, then bass, drums, lead and finally vocals. But you shouldn't stick to an order, if something fits first then throw it in there.

There's no proper order. If someone finds something interesting or something that sounds good you should go with it, regardless of whether it's drums or bass or guitar or whatever. I mean, I can think of a thousand songs that probably started out with the bassist just playing riffs but also the same with guitar and vocals etc.

Personally though, I wouldn't start with drums unless you find something particularly interesting to do with them since they're more of a back-up instrument. Find a good riff or melody and go from there but if you get something cool to play on drums you can have it as an intro or a fill or something.

Drums can be good if you're trying to write through jamming. Then its usually best to build upwards; drums - just to set the tempo - rhythm, bass then lead. Otherwise, it's literally go with what works. Any band member can come up with an idea for a riff, and if the rest like it, run with it.
