I find this stuff interesting and seeing as we have a diverse group here it seemed like a good idea.

I'm American(obviously), but a huge mutt. My earliest ancestors that I can trace were Arabs living in the vicinity of the Jordan River in either modern Jordan or Israel. During the Arab conquests of north Africa and Iberia my ancestors settled in Moorish Spain, and intermarried with another line of my family which were ethnic Spaniards. When Spain conquered south America my ancestors settled in Chile, and my grandmother moved to the states in the 40s from Chile. Another side of my family were French and settled in Quebec shortly after the French colonized it, somewhere around 1650. They moved south sometime in the late 1800s. The rest of my heritage is less clear, I know that I have Scottish ancestors but that's about it, an Irish member of my family came into Boston in the 1860s and immediately went into the Union army(probably forced in).

So to recap, Nationality: American, Ethnicity: Arab, Spanish, French, Irish, and Scottish

My surname originates from Cornwall. The earliest I know of is my great grandparents (I think) lived in Lancashire - they moved there (possibly from Cornwall) to find work in the recently opened coal mines (Late 20th Century). During Thatchers reign, many went to the US and Australia for work, others returned to Cornwall, but apparently we couldn't be assed with that, and for whatever reason stayed in Lancashire for a number of years. All in all, that side of family has moved a grand total of ~200 miles in 100 years.

As for the other side, it proved problematic to trace, and I don't know much. I believe I have 3 generations of Englishman from one side and 4 generations from the other.

Ethnicity: Mostly German, some mixed British nationalities from my mother's side.
On my mother's side there's a mixture of Scotch/Irish, some German, and maybe some others.

My father's side is strictly German. His father's parents or grandparents came from Transylvania, where for several centuries there existed a sizable German minority originating from Saxony. My grandmother's father was originally from East Prussia (a region in northeast Poland that was predominantly ethnically German until after the Second World War, when the Germans were driven west), but moved to the Ruhrgebiet (in west-central Germany) at some point before World War One. This is where my grandmother was born lived until 1925, when her family emigrated to the United States.

On my dad's side I'm descended from a black slave chef, who came over with a French family to Louisiana wayyyy back in the day. I'm also very, very distantly related to the Ricard family, of the Pernod-Ricard wines. On my mother's side I come from a Hispanic/Native American background, I'm not sure exactly what tribe, but in southern California. My mother's dad was German, and I think his family moved to America during World War II but I'm not entirely sure on that one.

So pretty much - German, French, Cajun/black, and Hispanic in fairly equal qualities. :S

I honestly don't know. I know where the name originated from, but nothing of my ancestors from that region. I would expect its possible, as the time many left for the mines in the north coincides with the time the language died out.

I'm an absolute mutt as far as my ethnicity goes. I know for sure that I have German, Polish, Slovak and most likely either Scottish or Irish in there somewhere. From what I've researched, probably Scottish.

My father's side of the family has been in this country since the late 1500s and I traced some of them back to England and surrounding areas.

My mothers side came here during the early 1900s.


Most people think I'm a total Irishman, though.

I have not. Though I can not say I am surprised to hear that. Why are all the good Irish musician taken so soon? Yet U2 and O'Connor are still alive.

I'm American. My Mother's side of the family is completely French and my Mother is a first generation American. My Dad's father was Sicilian and his mother Irish. I'm much more connected with my French Heritage though. I speak a little French and have relatives in France that I have visited.

My grandparents moved to the "Pakistan" side of India when the 2 countries became separate in 1947. My family name (Shaikh) suggests that I'm a descendant of the royal Mughal Empire, or of Arab ancestry.

My mother's mother is Irish, and her entire family come from a town in the Republic of Ireland called Carlow, which probably has something to do with my first name. I don't know anything about my ancestors, but after reading this thread (well, Geoff's post anyway) I should probably look into it.
